Can a Smartwatch measure Blood Pressure?

The creator of this post has chosen the Omron HeartGuide smartwatch as the best model that can measure your blood pressure accurately.

Even though a high blood pressure can sometimes be discovered through different symptoms, most of the time it isn’t noticeable at all.

Many people die every year because of high blood pressure without having any idea they had it, thereby it is also called “The Silent Killer”.

A blood pressure monitor is a device that’s used in hospitals and at your own doctor to give you insights in your personal blood pressure values.

Buying one to use at home is possible as well but this device isn’t very easy to use while you’re not at home and can be annoying to carry with you all the time.

Thankfully, at this very moment, there are a decent amount of smartwatch models available on the market that can measure blood pressure. Some examples are the Asus Vivowatch BP, the Model X smartwatch and the Z18 smartwatch.

Smartwatch, Smart Bracelet And Fitness Tracker Models That Can Measure Blood Pressure And At Least One Key Feature Per Model

Based on different articles I’ve read online, I would say that the Omron HeartGuide will most likely be the best blood pressure measuring smartwatch.

HeartGuide Wearable Blood Pressure Monitor
The Omron HeartGuide smartwatch.

Why is the Omron HeartGuide watch the best blood pressure measuring smartwatch in my opinion?

This watch comes with an inflatable wristband that is able to measure your blood pressure, which is called an “oscillometric” measurement.

It’s the only smartwatch out there that I personally know of that has an inflatable wristband and the company aims to be medically accurate as well.

Other smartwatches that can measure blood pressure are most likely equipped with the PPG (photoplethysmography) and the ECG (electrocardiogram) sensors, which are able to give a good estimation of what your blood pressure currently is but it won’t be as accurate as the inflatable option.

After doing the measurement, it will automatically sync from the watch to your phone through Omron’s application that’s on your smartphone.

Besides this, the watch can do heart rate measurements, track your sleep and the number of steps you take every day.

On a single charge, the watch is able to last between 10 days and two weeks.

With a full battery, you’ll be good to do 30 to 50 blood pressure checks.

How much does the Omron HeartGuide cost?

The price of the watch could change over time but the current price of the watch can be checked on Omron’s website.

Is the Omron HeartGuide watch already released yet?

As of right now, you’ll be able to pre-order the watch on the website of Omron. Shipping will start on the 8th of January, 2019.

As of right now, there are different ways of detecting your blood pressure on a smartwatch.

The first one that comes to mind is a cuff-less method called PTT (Pulse Transit Time).

PTT is the time it needs to travel from the heart to another point in the body, which in this case is the wrist because the watch is measuring from there.

The watch is going to need two sensors to measure your blood pressure: a PPG (photoplethysmography) sensor to detect your pulse and an ECG (electrocardiogram) sensor for detecting when the pulse has left the heart.

Secondly is a smartwatch with an inflatable wristband that takes an oscillometric measurement.

Most of the smartwatches that have the ability to measure blood pressure will make use of the PPG (photoplethysmography) and ECG (electrocardiogram) sensors.

With these sensors, the watch can give you a good estimation but it’s not going to be exactly on point.

A smartwatch like the Omron HeartGuide has an inflatable wristband, which is able to give you the most accurate measurements in this day and age.

I’m pretty sure that including the sensors for estimating the blood pressure are not that hard to include in a smartwatch.

An inflatable option will most likely be a little bit harder to include but will definitely be possible too.

At the moment there aren’t any Fitbit models out there that are able to measure blood pressure.

I have found a few threads on the forums of Fitbit though, where you can vote on possible feature suggestions for future models.

There were rumors that the new Samsung Galaxy Watch was going to have blood pressure monitoring but unfortunately the watch doesn’t have it.

Samsung is doing a lot of upgrades to health tracking, so we might see it in one of their future models.

Right now, there are no models of the brand Garmin out there that are able to measure blood pressure.

As of right now, It is not possible to measure your blood pressure on any of the Apple Watch models that are out there without the help of a connected blood pressure monitor.

An example of a blood pressure monitor that can connect with your smartphone through Bluetooth and then be used on your Apple Watch, with the use of an app is the QardioArm.

Can you accurately measure blood pressure with a connected blood pressure monitor to the Apple Watch?

As long as the used blood pressure monitor has an inflatable wristband, is medically precise,  and fully tested, then making an accurate measurement should be no problem.

The QardioArm is an example of a monitor that’s both FDA approved and clinically tested.

How do I measure blood pressure with a blood pressure monitor connected to the Apple Watch?

I’m going to give you an example of how the QardioArm can work together with your watch so that you can measure your blood pressure yourself.

First of all, you’re going to need to have the Qardio Heart Health app installed on the smartphone your watch is connected to.

Pair the QardioArm with your smartphone, then open the app on your Apple Watch.

If the watch shows a green button, then the phone is successfully paired with the QardioArm but if there’s a grey button you’ll have to try to connect them again because that means they are not paired yet.

Now that everything is set up right you can slide your arm through the opening of the QardioArm and close it.

When that’s done you can click the green button on the watch to start the measurement.

Once the measurement is done it will be displayed on your watches screen and the data is kept under the history tab within the application itself.

The history tab can be found on the main menu within the Qardio Heart Health app.
