Over the past years YouTube has been growing fast and making a video on your smartphone has become very easy and is now a pretty normal thing for everybody.

But what about smartwatches? Are they already able to record video as well?

Good news is upon us because as of right now several smartwatch models out there can record video. A few examples of models that support recording a video from your wrist are the Samsung Galaxy Gear, the DZ09 and the Scinex SW20.

This one has a 5.0-megapixel camera and for both 2G and 3G, you’ll be able to use cellular data connections.

Samsung Galaxy Gear

The so-called “Memographer” camera is activated when swiping down across the watch face. It can record and you’re able to watch back recorded video.

The camera is 2.0-megapixels.

You can record your voice with different voice effects, it’s a great watch for kids.

It has a built-in camera but I wasn’t able to find the specifications of the camera.

WJPILIS Smartwatch

It comes with a built-in calendar and has a 0.3-megapixel camera.

Zeblaze THOR 4

It has a heart rate sensor, proximity sensor, accelerometer, and the camera is a 5.0-megapixel camera.

ZGPAX S8

The watch weighs 150 grams and has a 2.0-megapixel built-in camera.

Can an Apple Watch record video?

It is not possible to make recordings with any of the currently available Apple Watch models itself because they all don’t have a camera.

But I’ve found something that could help you achieve this.

The Glide’s CMRA wristband has a built-in camera that can function as your Apple Watches camera.

Wristbands of the Apple Watches are interchangeable, which makes it very easy to change the band.

Another possibility is to have the watch connected with your smartphone, in this way, you can see the footage that you’re recording on your phone through Bluetooth and WiFi on the watch.

To make this work you’ll need to set up the following things: have Bluetooth and WiFi enabled on both your watch and phone, the Hudl Technique app has to be installed and within the settings of the app the “Show app” toggle has to be enabled.

After you’ve done this you can open the Hudl Technique app on your smartwatch and open the camera on your smartphone.

The screen will automatically update on the watch and with a tap, on the watch, you can start and stop recording anytime you want.

Besides this option, the Apple Watch comes with a built-in camera app that should work alright as well but might not work accordingly on older software or older smartwatch models.

Can you play a recorded video on the smartwatch?

I can’t say for certain that every single model out there is able to play recorded videos.

But most of the models with a camera function will have an application that comes with the factory installed applications of the watch just like the gallery application on your smartphone.

Which smartwatches have the best camera?

Considering the list I’ve gathered of smartwatches that actually have a camera, I can inform you about which watches within the list will probably have the best camera.

I personally haven’t tested any of these watches and I’m deciding this on the camera specifications found per watch.

The following smartwatches have 5.0 megapixels, which is the highest amount of megapixels I’ve found within the list and will most likely be the ones with the best quality cameras: Microwear H2, S99C1 smartwatch, S99C2 smartwatch and the Zeblaze THOR 4.

Do smartwatch cameras record good quality videos?

We have seen various smartwatch models with different quality cameras. But is the captured content actually of good enough quality to happily watch back?

Well, everybody is going to have a different opinion about this question because a certain quality that would be good enough for one person might be terrific for somebody else.

Let’s take a look at the different megapixel numbers from low to high that is in the list of the camera containing watches and what quality you can expect based on information I’ve found on the web.

0.3-Megapixel camera

It is called a camera but the recorded video will definitely not be of a quality that you can call good.

1.3-Megapixel camera

The quality will most likely be acceptable but still not great.

2.0-Megapixel camera

There are smartwatch models out there that can record 720p with this camera type.

So, I would say that good quality can be achieved but this will probably not be the case for every single model.

5.0-Megapixel camera

With this one, you’ll most likely be able to record good quality videos.

Conclusion

Recording a good quality video can be achieved but you’ll probably have to go for one with a 2.0-megapixel camera or better.

Can you capture a good video while the smartwatch is on your wrist?

The camera of a smartwatch is located above the screen on most models.

So, just like a camera, it is going to come down to pointing at the spots that you would like to have in your video.

There are even models available that have a 360 camera, which means that the bezel of the watch, where the camera is located on can be turned 360 degrees.

Capturing different angles are going to be much easier with this feature.

So, recording a good video while the watch is on your wrist can definitely be done in my opinion.

How to extend the recording time of a video on a smartwatch?

There are two main factors that play part in the recording time of a smartwatch.

The first one is the memory storage of the watch, once this is full you won’t be able to record anymore.

The second factor is the battery life of the watch. Using a camera on the watch is going to drain the battery quite fast.

In order to get the longest recording time on a smartwatch, you’ll have to choose a model that both has long battery life and a lot of memory space.

How do you export an recorded video from the smartwatch to another device like a laptop?

Smartwatches that have a camera function will most likely have a micro SD card that can be inserted and taken out.

Once you’ve recorded everything you want, you can take the SD card out and plug it into your laptop.

Drag the files you need from the micro SD map to your computer and you’ll be able to do anything you want with the video.

Can you video call with a smartwatch?

With a built-in camera the smartwatch is able to make video calls with other people but in order to film yourself during the call, a front-facing camera or 360 camera would be nice.

Apps, where you can make video calls with, are Glide and Messenger, which will be addressed further in this article.

Smartwatches itself can have a video call application that comes with the factory installed applications.

An example is the Dokiwatch, which is built for kids to only call with a preset list of contacts.

Can you make a video call with an Apple Watch?

Unfortunately, the Apple Watches that are available right don’t have built-in cameras.

But video calling on your Apple Watch is possible with, for example, the Glide’s CMRA wristband, which I’ve covered before in this article.

Can you make an audio call with an Apple Watch?

There will be a phone icon on the watch, which is an application that brings the possibility to make audio calls through Facetime.

With what apps can I make video calls from my smartwatch?

Glide

This app needs to be installed on your phone as well. After installing you’ll be able to make live video calls, record a video and receive and watch video messages.

The app is available for both Android and IOS.

Messenger

The app that’s used within Facebook, where you can make video calls with every person that’s on your Facebooks friends list.

Can a smartwatch record audio?

Yes, that’s definitely possible.

Almost every smartwatch model I know has a built-in microphone that makes it possible for the user to do, for example, speech to text searches on Google.

Recording your voice becomes quite easy in this way but an application will be needed to do so.

Two examples of applications that can record audio are Just Press Record and the Wear Audio Recorder, which will both be explained further in this article.

With what apps can I record audio with my smartwatch?

Recording and sending back audio should be no problem with this application.

With this app, you’ll need a phone to be paired with the watch but it will be possible to record the audio with your smartwatch.

Once the recording is done, it will automatically save it through Bluetooth to your phone.

Unfortunately, the app is only available for IOS and is not for free.

Wear Audio Recorder

Once the app is downloaded it will be accessible on both your watch and phone.

To start and stop the recording is quite easy with one tap on the watch and once it’s stopped the watch will automatically sync with your phone.

The recording is now saved and exporting the audio file to Google Drive or Dropbox can be done with one click, within the app on your smartphone.

The app is free to use and only available for Android devices.

Can you take a selfie with a smartwatch?

As long as your smartwatch has a built-in camera or a wristband that’s containing a camera then capturing pictures should not be a problem.

So, taking selfies is definitely possible as well.
